    Lebanon’s complex electoral structure was designed to achieve a balance in ensuring political representation for the country’s different religious groups.  With the exception of the period during the 1974-1989 civil war, multi-party elections have been held regularly since the 1920s. The most recent parliamentary elections were held in June 2009 and local elections took place in May 2010.

IFES provides technical assistance to Lebanese authorities to support the performance of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities (MOIM) in its conduct of the 2009 parliamentary and 2010 municipal elections. IFES’ project provides a structured and strategic approach to providing direct technical assistance through activities that seek to strengthen the credibility and effective management of the Ministry’s election administration.
