Guinea’s Foreign Affairs Minister Visits IFES

Foreign Affairs Minister Bakary Fofana visited IFES’s headquarters on August 10, 2010. Minister Fofana, in Washington on an official visit, met with IFES staff on what he called an emotional reunion with long-time colleagues.

Guinea’s Second Round of Presidential Elections Are Underway

The Guinean Supreme Court announced it has rejected the challenges made to the results of the first round of the presidential election. As a result, a run-off between the two top-scoring candidates can now take place.  Almami Cyllah, IFES regional director for Africa, has issued this statement in response:

Guinea: Ready or not… Here we go!

If all goes according to plan, Guinea will hold its presidential election on 27 June. With 24 contenders and a half-dozen favorites, this will be the first time candidates are representative of a large cross-section of Guinean society. IFES has been supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission of Guinea (CENI) and civil society in preparation of these elections.

Since the country gained independence from France in 1958, it has been teased with the prospect of democratic institutions many times, but has yet to see drastic changes take place. This year, after Captian Moussa Dadis Camara was injured in an attempted assassination, Guineans seem to be closer than ever to exercising the right to elect their leader.

Le régime politique qui a été mis en place en Guinée dans le cadre de la Loi Fondamentale du 23 décembre 1990, renforcé par la Loi Constitutionnelle du 11 novembre 2001, est celui présidentiel avec une large prépondérance du Président de la République, Chef de l’Exécutif.

IFES has been working in Guinea since 1991 and has since conducted several technical assessments and provided technical assistance to a variety of electoral stakeholders, including Guinea’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). With USAID funding, IFES has supported the CENI in preparing for transparent, credible, and participatory legislative and presidential elections in 2010.
