IFES Observes International Day of Democracy

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe September 15th as the International Day of Democracy. The preamble of the resolution affirmed that: "while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region...democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life."

Indonesian Presidential Elections

Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation and the third-largest democracy, goes to the polls tomorrow, July 8, 2009, to elect a new president. Adam Schmidt, IFES-Indonesia country director, and his staff have put together an Indonesian Election Kit to better understand the election taking place in the country Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said "has demonstrated so clearly … that Islam, democracy and modernity cannot only coexist but thrive together."

IFES, Indonesian Election Commission Pledge Cooperation

IFES and Indonesia's National Election Commission agreed to work closely to prepare Indonesia for legislative and presidential elections in 2009. H. Abdul Hafiz Anshary, chairman of the Komisi Permilihan Umum, and Adam Schmidt, IFES chief of party in Indonesia, signed a memorandum of understanding on March 18 in Jakarta.
