IFES Observes International Day of Democracy

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe September 15th as the International Day of Democracy. The preamble of the resolution affirmed that: "while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region...democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life."

IFES-Pakistan Final Report Serves as an Electoral Disputes Guide

Achieving a fair and timely resolution of electoral disputes is critical for a democratic electoral process. For Pakistan, key administrative and procedural shortcomings in the electoral processes need to be addressed to enhance credibility and acceptance of election outcomes, promote peaceful transitions of governments in the future, and overcome current political challenges. IFES' Pakistan: Post-Election Community-Based Mediation and Adjudication Program, which began in October 2007, was designed to strengthen electoral dispute resolution processes and mitigate the potential for election violence.
