Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

Daraja Update
This November 1997 issue of “Daraja” touches on the struggle to achieve civic elections in Kenya and promoting democracy and good governance in Africa. The lead article focuses on the effort to enhance civic education and elections in the midst of executive governmental power that is not in favor of promoting political participation or expanding democracy. The second major piece describes the pathway to achieving peace in Africa and six major impediments to achieving strong democracy in the region. The challenges presented by the article to developing democracy in Africa are overcoming violence, sound democracy development managment, enhancing the role of civil society, mainstreaming women into politics, increasing the capacity of African institutions that allow for democracy development and developing an ownership of democratic reforms in order to bring about demcoracy that fits the region and culture that it will be governing.

The poster contains brief information on the time frame state and local officials are elected for and the number of representatives to be elected in El Salvador.

“How Does One Vote?” is a poster, available in Spanish, issued in 1997 by the “Equipo Maiz” group in El Salvador, in lead up to the 1997 Legislative Election in El Salvador. The poster is meant to instruct voters on how to correctly exercise their right to vote. The poster contains pictures and brief explanations on the voting steps to be taken by the electors when going to the polls.

“Citizens’ Participation” is a poster, available in Spanish, issued in 1997 by the “Equipo Maiz” group in El Salvador, in lead up to the 1997 Legislative Election in El Salvador. The poster is meant to encourage citizens’ participation in the political life of El Salvador. It contains several advices to be followed by the electors to ensure their voices are heard in building a democratic society in El Salvador. Among the messages are the following: to vote in elections, to fight for the equality of men and women, to opt for a public office and to participate in communal projects or social organizations.

“Elections ‘97” is an informative booklet, available in Spanish, issued in 1997 by the “Equipo Maiz” group in El Salvador, in lead up to the 1997 Legislative and Municipal Elections. The booklet contains five chapters which focus on the following topics: politics and citizen participation, the elections, and the political parties in El Salvador. The aim of the booklet is to increase citizens’ participation in the March 1997 Legislative and Municipal Elections and to encourage them to get informed on the agenda of the political parties to run in the elections.
