Citizen Organizations and Electoral Institute of Mexico City Strengthen Ties Through Election Observation Workshops
In August, IFES held two Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) workshops on election observation in Mexico City in partnership with the Electoral Institute of Mexico City. The trainings aimed to build local capacity on election observation and strengthen the network of observers.

Participatory Budgeting Project to Be Implemented in Mexico City
On June 4, leaders of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) visited IFES' headquarters to sign an agreement that marks the next phase of their longstanding partnership. With this “Enhancing Citizen Participation in Mexico City” agreement, the IECM will welcome IFES’ expertise for research on comparative experiences in participatory budgeting, and the organizations will work together to produce civil society workshops in Mexico City on participatory budgeting and domestic election observation.

On April 4-5, IFES co-sponsored the Ninth Forum on Latin American Democracy, hosted by Mexico’s National Electoral Institute in Mexico City. The annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held on December 3, commemorates the human rights of persons with disabilities. The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.” In 2018, IFES partnered with disabled people’s organizations in every region of the world to develop new tools and approaches to empower people with disabilities to participate in political life.

On November 14, 2018, Vasu Mohan, IFES' regional director for Asia-Pacific and technical lead on elections, conflict and security, provided testimony to the House of Representatives’ Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. He was invited to speak about “Reducing the Risk of Mass Atrocities: The Role of Inclusive Electoral Systems Design and Election Institutions in Preventing Violence and Promoting Security for All People.”
